Formatting your essay according to the APA guidelines (6th ed.) could be very tricky. Fortunately, this guide shall help you score high marks for professionalism. And, even it, do scroll down to download our free APA essay template if you’re not planning to read.
Note: All detailed instructions refer to Microsoft Word. If you’re using a unique word processor, you may need to search for an equivalent setting.
An APA paper has four parts:
- The Title Page
- The Abstract
- The Essay
- The Reference List
It’s best to split up each section with a typical page break (Insert > Page Break).
The default font is Times New Roman, size 12 (an inferior dimensions are fine for footnotes). If you select any kind of font, make certain it is a serif font. You could, however, use a sans-serif font for captions and descriptions in figures and tables.
Since 2007, the default margin for just about any Word document has been 1 inch all around. Fortunately, APA format has the requirement that is same. If for a few good reason you’ll want to fix the margins, go to Page Layout > Margins > Normal.
All of the text in your essay should always be double-spaced. To help make this change quickly, first press Ctrl + A to highlight all text and then press Home > Line and Paragraph Spacing (symbol) > 2.0. Make sure you also click on “Remove Space After Paragraph.”

The abstract receives its own page:
This time around leave out the words “Running head” and give just the title (or even the shortened version). Insert a full page number (Insert > Page Number > Plain #3), while making sure your header is in the font that is rightTimes New Roman, size 12). Each subsequent page should currently have the correct header.
Centre the word Abstract and left-align the summary that is actual. Do not indent this paragraph.
